You can log in by email (links below to relevant plugins), but in the registration form wouldn't you be doubling up the request for the user information - if your username field is labelled "Email" and you also have the actual "email" fields?
Do you want some sort of pre-registration authentication of a genuine email address, and if that verification fails, the registration will not succeed?
This occurs anyway when you have "Self" or "Admin" activation; the user needs to click a link either way, which would suggest email is received, read and actioned by a real person.
These extensions might help, they allow the email to be used as a username for login but not sure if they do the authentication during registration process or simply allow the email to be used in place of email for the login.
