Use Akeeba to backup the site https://extensions.joomla.org/extension/akeeba-backup/
Install a virtual host (Wamp) https://wampserver.aviatechno.net/
Create a folder in wamp's \www folder e.g. \joomla1
Use kickstart to install the .jpa backup in ajoomla1 (the install will create the database on localhost) https://www.akeeba.com/products/akeeba-kickstart.html
Point your browser at localhost/joomla1 and update

If successful make a backup, clear your remote server/database and install the backup of the updated site
If no avail fix problems, create a folder \joomla2 and install the original backup. Rinse repeat until successful
